A 13-member committee, appointed by Governor Bassey Edet Otu, recently convened at the Metropolitan Hotel’s Diamond Hall to embark on a week-long review of the Carnival Calabar, Africa’s largest street party.

The initiative aims to assess the carnival’s impact over the past two decades and formulate strategies for its sustained growth and contribution to the state’s socio-economic development.

The committee, chaired by High Chief Edem Duke, a former Minister of Culture, Tourism and National Orientation, is tasked with aligning the carnival’s future with Governor Otu’s vision.

Duke emphasized the need to solidify the carnival’s sustainability, particularly in challenging economic climates, and to enhance its global appeal, especially within the African diaspora.

He highlighted the carnival’s role as a “Renaissance” of African cultural identity, creativity, and community spirit, positioning Cross River State as a cultural hub.

Sir Gabe Onah, Chairman of the Carnival Commission, commended the band leaders and members for their dedication to the carnival’s evolution, recognizing them as the “organic custodians” of its vibrant cultural content.

He advocated for strengthened government structures, increased private sector involvement, the development of a dedicated carnival village and museum, expanded international engagement, and the utilization of expert consultation for strategic implementation.

The review process included presentations from band leaders and committee members, followed by a secretariat summary.

The committee, which includes prominent figures such as former First Lady Onari Duke, Senator Florence Ita Giwa, Senator Gershom Bassey, and international tourism expert Ikechi Uko, is expected to provide comprehensive recommendations for the carnival’s future.

The committee’s goal is to ensure the Carnival Calabar continues to thrive as a significant cultural and economic asset for Cross River State and a beacon of African heritage on the global stage.
