…remembers father as ‘An Inspiration and Role Model’
The organiser of the Akwaaba African Travel Market, Ambassador Ikechi Uko, will lay his father, Elder S. O. Uko, to rest on April 11 at Ogbuebilla Oboro in Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia State.
Elder Uko passed away on October 1, 2024, at the age of 98 years and 10 months. Born on December 29, 1925, he was the son of Elder Enyinnaya Uko (Egbu gi bekee) of the Uko Iroegbu household in Ekpinma Ngwaukwu, Ogbuebilla, Oboro, Ikwuano LGA, Abia State.
He began his career with the Nigerian Railways in 1956 as a communication technician, a role that took him to various parts of the country.
As a result, his children were born in different towns across Nigeria. Elder Uko was also a dedicated lay preacher with the Methodist Church of Nigeria.
Following the passing of his wife in 2009, Elder Uko remained a guiding figure in his family. A Service of Songs will be held in his honor at the Methodist Wesley Cathedral in Enugu on April 7.
Reflecting on his father’s life, Ambassador Ikechi Uko said, “My dad was a great inspiration and a wonderful example of a fulfilled life. I always teased him that he got me into traveling, he by rail, and I by air. He will be greatly missed by his siblings, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.”
