The Federal Government’s proposed concession of major airports, including the Enugu International Airport, is currently underway, with the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development evaluating proposals from prospective concessionaires.

According to the ministry in a media statement, this initiative aims to ensure that these vital facilities can meet and maintain international standards, given the increasing financial demands of their operations.

Many airports are currently running at a loss and require monthly subsidies from the government.

The concession process, which began in previous administrations, has seen various proposals submitted, including different concession durations.

However, the ministry has emphasized that no fixed duration has been established, and all proposals are undergoing thorough evaluation before being reviewed by the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC) and presented to the Federal Executive Council (FEC) for approval.

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has ensured transparency in the process by including aviation labour unions in the negotiating teams.

The ministry has denied reports suggesting a lengthy concession period for the Enugu International Airport, describing them as baseless and untrue.

The government has reassured the public of its commitment to a transparent process, adhering strictly to due process, and making decisions in the best interest of the nation and the aviation sector.
