MMIA: Underground cable thief nabbed by Airforce guards, sustains gunshot wounds

A cable thief is currently cooling off his heels at the General Hospital, Oyinbo after sustaining gunshots wounds for attempting to steal underground amoured cables at the Lagos airport on Friday, July 21, 2023 at about  01:35hrs.

The thieves, three in number were sighted by guards on duty at the  Nigeria Airforce  HQ NADC gate along the airport road by NADC perimeter fence digging the FAAN underground amoured cable with the aid of a digger, shovel and cutlass. 

Spokesman for the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, Abdullahi Yakubu-Funtua in a press statement stated that, on sighting the guards, they took to their heels. 

Unfortunately, one of the thieves, Usmam Musa did not escape the shot fired by one of the airforce guard, Musa was hit on the shoulder.

“Usman Musa, 28 years old, a native of Adamawa State, residing at Ijora”.

“He was arrested and taken to 661NAFH Ikeja”.

The FAAN image maker disclosed that, “he is presently receiving treatment at General  Hospital Oyingbo while his other two  accomplices escaped”. 

“Usman Musa will be properly interrogated  after he has been stabilised”.  

Yakubu-Funtua said, the Agency believes  that this incident could  be a relevant clue to unravelling the theft of the Runway Lighting at the Murtala Muhammed International  Airport, Ikeja.

It would be recalled that, that three weeks ago, the runway airfield lighting was stolen by a syndicate alleged to be staff of the airport.

This incident led to a minor reshuffle and redeployment and appointment of some key officers.
