Air travellers heading to or from Enugu will face disruptions as the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced the immediate temporary closure of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport.
The closure is necessitated by critical and unforeseen damage to the runway surface.
According to a statement released by FAAN spokesperson, Mrs. Obiageli Orah, a significant rupture in the asphalt at a vital section of the runway requires urgent repair work.
As a result, all flight operations at the Enugu airport will be suspended from April 22nd to May 6th, 2025.
Passengers scheduled to fly into Akanu Ibiam International Airport during this period will now have their flights redirected to alternative airports in the vicinity.
FAAN emphasized that this decision aligns with Nigeria’s civil aviation regulations and underscores the agency’s unwavering commitment to ensuring passenger safety and the ongoing upgrade of airport infrastructure.
Mrs. Orah stated that the runway will be completely inaccessible for both aircraft landings and takeoffs throughout the duration of the repair work.
The agency conveyed its sincere apologies for the short notice and any inconvenience this unforeseen closure may cause to airport users and other stakeholders, appealing for their understanding and cooperation during this essential maintenance period.
