The Global Vice Chairperson for North and West Africa of Women in Logistics and Transport (WiLAT), Dr. Ogochukwu Ugboma, has called for accelerated action to empower women in the logistics and transport industry, as the world marks International Women’s Day, IWD, 2025.

Speaking at the IWD celebration held at the Lagos airport terminal 2, Dr. Ugboma stated that the time for incremental progress is over, and it is now time to accelerate the pace of change for women in the industry.

Delivering a paper on the 2025 IWD theme: ‘Accelerate Action’, emphasized the importance of breaking barriers, empowering through education, creating opportunities, and collaborating for change to achieve gender equality.

Dr. Ugboma praised the progress made by WiLAT Nigeria, which has empowered women to break barriers and shatter glass ceilings in industries traditionally dominated by men.

The WiLAT chairman also acknowledged the challenges faced by women in the industry, including underrepresentation in leadership roles, systemic barriers to entry, and unequal opportunities.

According to her, the critical role women play in shaping the future of the logistics and transport industry cannot be overemphasized, bringing unique perspectives, innovative solutions, and a collaborative spirit that drives progress.

She also drew attention to the remarkable examples of women breaking barriers and making their mark in Nigeria and across Africa.

Dr. Ugboma issued a call to action, urging women to dream boldly, lead fearlessly, and support one another unwaveringly, while also thanking male allies for their support in creating a more inclusive and equitable industry.

As the world looks to the future, Dr. Ugboma committed to accelerating action every day, building a world where every woman has the opportunity to reach her full potential and gender equality is a reality.

She concluded by quoting Wangari Maathai, saying, “In the course of history, there comes a time when humanity is called to shift to a new level of consciousness. That time is now. Let us rise to the occasion, accelerate action, and create a future where women in logistics and transport can thrive.”
