The Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN) has congratulated its members on the occasion of World Tourism Day (WTD), celebrated annually on September 27.
In a virtual media briefing, FTAN President, Mr. Nkereuwem Onung, emphasized the crucial role of tourism in fostering peace and understanding globally.
This year’s WTD theme, “Tourism and Peace,” aligns perfectly with FTAN’s mission to promote cultural exchange and reconciliation.
Onung commended the resilience of Nigeria’s tourism sector, which has continued to thrive despite numerous challenges, including security concerns and infrastructure limitations.
“Tourism is a powerful tool for bridging cultural divides and fostering peaceful coexistence, our members play a vital role in this mission by creating opportunities for intercultural dialogue and understanding.”
While acknowledging the progress made by the tourism sector, Onung expressed concern over the lack of synergy between public and private sector operators.
He called for a more collaborative approach and urged the government to elevate tourism to a standalone ministry.
“The absence of a dedicated tourism ministry has hindered the sector’s growth. We need a clear roadmap and a unified approach to unlock the full potential of tourism in Nigeria.”
FTAN reiterated its call for collaboration among the Ministry of Tourism, the Nigerian Tourism Development Authority (NTDA), and the National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR).
By working together, these entities can create a more conducive environment for the tourism industry to thrive.
