The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) is advocating for a significant overhaul of the country’s radar system to ensure the safety and efficiency of domestic and international flights.
Mr. John Tayo, Director of Air Traffic Services at NAMA, during a visit to the TRACON site in Kano, expressed concerns about the current radar system, highlighting its obsolescence and the need for a modern replacement.
While acknowledging government efforts to modernize the system, he emphasized that a complete overhaul is the optimal solution.
“The current radar system, despite advancements, is lagging behind global standards,” John explained.
“Though it can still guarantee safety, it’s crucial to upgrade to a more advanced system for enhanced efficiency and reliability.”
Tayo further emphasized the importance of a robust radar system in ensuring air safety and security.
“This system is the first line of defense in monitoring aircraft movements, identifying potential threats, and coordinating rescue operations,” he said.
The Director commended the dedication of air traffic controllers who work tirelessly to maintain the safety of Nigerian airspace.
He also acknowledged the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders, including the military, emergency services, and aviation authorities, in ensuring effective rescue operations.
