Climate Information: NiMet gets thumbs up from World Bank

The World Bank has commended the key role played by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet, in climate information generation and agro-meteorological services.

The Water Resources Component Manager of the World Bank implementation of the Transforming Irrigation Management in Nigeria (TRIMING) Project, Mr. Kenneth Sunmonu during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding MoU between NiMet and the Federal Ministry of Water Resources represented by (TRIMING).

He also applauded the Agency’s commitment to quality climate services and access to hydro-meteorology data as its visible in the establishment of the world class Automated Weather Observation Station (AWOS) across the Nation.

Re-afirming NiMet as a critical stakeholder in the execution of the TRIMING Project, the Director General NiMet Prof. Mansur Bako Matazu, revealed that the Agency had been working in synergy with the Ministry since the inception of the project, which informed the MoU.

He stated that, the integration and adequate use of weather and climate information into the design of the project would aid and mitigate siltation, water logging, and also provide hydrological ratio for irrigation requirements. 

Prof. Matazu disclosed that NiMet will come up with detailed irrigation requirements for river basins across the country to help Improve access to irrigation and drainage services, increase yields and strengthen agricultural service delivery in Nigeria.
