…. seeks 81billion naira extra for runway completion

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has submitted a budget proposal of 63 billion Naira to the National Assembly, emphasizing key projects like the Abuja 2nd runway and the refurbishment of Lagos airport’s old terminal.

He also requested an extra 81billion Naira for the completion of the 2nd runway of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Abuja, expressing the danger associated with having only one runway for a capital city like Abuja.

Acknowledging a 40% performance on the 2023 budget, he urged the committee to prioritize safety through consultancy for airport master plans and equipment procurement.

In a statement by his media aide, Odutayo Oluseyi, Keyamo disclosed the President’s approval for screening machines at Nigeria’s international airports and addressed concerns about airport concession transparency.

Despite previous issues, he asserted that concession is necessary for the international airports in Lagos, Kano, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Enugu.

He has proposed a quality concession process, emphasizing five key industry areas which include amongst others: strict safety compliance, boosting local airlines to international standards, and enhancing aviation infrastructure.
