The Society of Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineers of Nigeria (SLAMEN), the premier professional organization for Aircraft Engineers in the country, recently celebrated International Aircraft Engineers Day on May 24, 2024.
This annual event honors the vital contributions of Aircraft Maintenance Engineers to the safety and reliability of air travel.
With a membership of approximately 4,000 licensed engineers, SLAMEN provides ongoing professional development through seminars and workshops.
The organization is an affiliate of Aircraft Engineers International (AEI), headquartered in Belgium, which focuses on global air safety and aviation maintenance standards.
During the celebration, SLAMEN President Engr. Mubarak Haladu highlighted the critical role that maintenance engineers play.
“Aircraft Maintenance Engineers are the unsung heroes of the aviation industry. We are proud to celebrate their dedication and expertise,” said Haladu.
He emphasized that every aircraft’s airworthiness is certified by these engineers before flight, adhering to Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations and International Civil Aviation Organization standards.
To mark the occasion, SLAMEN organized a symposium on best practices in aircraft maintenance, a training session on new technologies, and an awards ceremony to honor outstanding contributions.
The society also called on the government and industry stakeholders to enhance aircraft maintenance infrastructure and training programs in Nigeria.
Haladu pointed out the need for more maintenance facilities and employment opportunities for qualified engineers.
“Investing in aircraft maintenance will not only improve safety but also boost industry growth and save foreign exchange for Nigeria,” he stated.
As the aviation community celebrated, SLAMEN reaffirmed its commitment to advancing the industry’s safety and efficiency, recognizing the indispensable role of Aircraft Maintenance Engineers.
