… celebrate IWD 2025 with resolve, unity
In a vibrant display of solidarity and determination, Nigeria’s female aviation professionals converged to mark International Women’s Day 2025, echoing the United Nations’ call to celebrate women worldwide.
The event, spearheaded by the female arm of the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE), resonated with this year’s theme, “Accelerate Action Towards Gender Equality,” serving as a powerful testament to the resilience and “can-do spirit” of women in a traditionally male-dominated sector.
The atmosphere was electric as pilots, engineers, air traffic controllers, and other aviation experts, gathered under the leadership of Engr. Kyola Dyaji, head of the NAAPE Commission.
The day was not merely a celebration, but a strategic platform to acknowledge the significant contributions of women who have long been breaking barriers, enhancing safety, security, and fostering growth within the Nigerian aviation industry.
Engr. Dyaji, in her opening address, highlighted the pioneering women who have shattered glass ceilings, paving the way for future generations.
Her words served as a rallying cry, urging women to embrace boldness and pursue their ambitions without hesitation.
Comrade Abednego Galadinma, NAAPE President, represented by Secretary General, Comrade Olayinka Abioye, reinforced the union’s unwavering commitment to gender equality.
He emphasized NAAPE’s stance against discrimination, highlighting the union’s efforts to support and defend its female members against harassment and violence.
Comrade Abednego further stated that, the event demonstrated that within their ranks, professionalism transcends gender.
He articulated the event’s core values: justice, dignity, hope, equality, collaboration, tenacity, appreciation, and respect, and implored women to actively participate in labor matters, pledging both moral and financial support.
The day’s discussions were both insightful and inspiring. Mrs. Kate Nnanna-Ibemgbo, Deputy General Manager, Air Traffic Management/State Safety Programme, NCAA, stressed that, gender equality is not merely a human right, but a cornerstone for a peaceful and prosperous world.
While acknowledging the growing presence of female aviators across Africa, she stressed the need for continued progress, urging her colleagues to mentor the next generation.
Joy Ogbebo, Managing Director of Mamaj Aviation Consult, emphasized the pivotal role of mentorship in accelerating gender equality, highlighting the need for women to strive for their rightful place.
She advocated education, information, empowerment, and policy changes to dismantle discriminatory practices, echoing Kofi Annan’s sentiment that “knowledge is power.”
Engr. Uchechi Edosomwan concluded the discussions with a powerful message of empowerment, asserting that gender inequality will persist unless women actively challenge it.
She encouraged women to embrace the qualities that set them apart, reminding them that “the word impossible does not exist to a mind willing to push beyond limits.”
She painted a picture of a long and winding road, but assured that with the right drive, equality is within reach.
The celebration culminated in an awards ceremony, recognizing the achievements of women who have shattered glass ceilings and made indelible marks on the Nigerian aviation landscape.
The event was a powerful reminder of the strength, resilience, and unwavering spirit of women in aviation, and a call to action to accelerate progress towards gender equality.
