Tanker Explosion: NUPENG/PTD Commiserates with families of victims

The National Chairman and entire members of NUPENG PTD has commiserated with the families of those  that lost their lives in the fire incident that took place yesterday evening following a crash involving a tanker that fell and caught fire on the Otedola bridge on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

National Chairman. NUPENG PTD described the loss of lives and properties as unfortunate.

According to him, the members of NUPENG/PTD have been working with the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC to ensure such disaster that occurred yesterday is reduced to the barest.

He said, “this is a most unfortunate occurrence because in the recent past, such calamities have been avoided as members of the NUPENG /PTD have been collaborating with the FRSC and other law enforcement agencies in observing minimum safety standards on the highways and engaging in training and retraining of our members. All efforts will be put in place to ensure that this kind of disaster does not occur again on our roads”.

“We sincerely mourn the dead and share the pains of affected families, the Lagos State Government and the entire people of Nigeria”, he added

fIt would be recalled that fuel – laden tanker yesterday evening exploded along the Otedola Bridge axis of Berger in Lagos burning 54 vehicles, with 9 people confirmed dead and many others injured.

The tanker was heading inwards Lagos towards Alausa when the crash occurred.

The General Manager Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Mr. Adesina Tiamiyu, said immediately the incident was reported, rescue efforts were put in place so as to avoid spreading to other vehicles.

He said nine bodies were recovered, 54 vehicles were burnt while the injured were taken to the hospital.

On his part, the Lagos State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Mr. Hyginus Omeje said the commission had embarked on restoring traffic and creating alternative routes.

The FRSC Sector Commander urged the motoring public to imbibe good driving culture especially keeping distance to other vehicles In case of emergencies.

The incident caused heavy traffic as people were left with no other alternative than to trek long distance to their various destinations.
