…NIS Implements Reforms Amid Allegations in South-Eastern States
Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, and Caroline Wuraola Adepoju, the Comptroller General of Immigration, have initiated an investigation into allegations of passport racketeering within the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) Commands in Abia, Enugu, Imo, and other South East states.
They emphasize ongoing efforts to identify and penalize those involved, assuring that the Federal Government will enforce appropriate disciplinary measures.
The NIS Public Relations Officer, Adedotun Aridegbe, revealed that the agency is leveraging technology to streamline passport acquisition, urging Nigerians to utilize online channels and avoid third-party vendors.
He emphasized adherence to standard operating procedures and timelines, discouraging any attempts at extortion by NIS personnel.
To address passport backlogs, the Minister of Interior is coordinating efforts to clear the backlog and the CGI advises applicants to submit requests six months prior to expiration to ease the system’s load.
Highlighting the agency’s commitment to efficiency, Aridegbe explained the recalibration of mechanisms to minimize contact, with fingerprint biometric capture being the primary reason for office visits.
The CGI assured applicants of a three-week processing time, contingent on technical factors and stressed the importance of aligning passport details with National Identity Management Commission records.
Media reports revealed allegations of extra fees and delays in passport processing in South-Eastern States, prompting scrutiny of the NIS.
In Abia, applicants claimed pressure to pay additional fees, totaling N33,000, beyond the official N25,000 for a five-year passport. Similar situations were reported in Owerri, Enugu, and Ebonyi, raising concerns about deviations from official costs and potential irregularities.
The NIS CGI addressed these concerns, emphasizing transparency and efficiency, assuring applicants that adhering to prescribed procedures and timelines should result in a smooth and timely passport acquisition process.
