The Nigerian Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, under the leadership of Minister Festus Keyamo, has initiated a comprehensive review of the nation’s airport development structure.

The process will involve a technical workshop in partnership with Munich International and Nigeria’s F.C.I International, which will lay the groundwork for the implementation of airport masterplans across the country.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the workshop, which was delivered by Permanent Secretary Dr. Emmanuel Meribole on behalf of the minister, Keyamo emphasized the importance of adhering to the masterplan, stating that compliance will be monitored by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

He stressed that implementing these plans will be mandatory for all Nigerian airports.

The workshop, which focuses on the development of an Airport Masterplan, comes at a crucial time when the CAA is also embarking on its own aviation development master planning.

This initiative aims to set new standards that will foster the growth and sustainability of the Nigerian aviation industry.

Mr. Fortune Idu, Chairman of the Airport Business Summit and Managing Director of F.C.I International, explained that the technical workshop is designed to provide guidance to the Ministry’s technical team and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) in the acquisition, procurement, and execution of the masterplan process.

He noted that the workshop is part of a fact-finding mission intended to prepare the Nigerian airports for long-term development.

The workshop is being led by Bünck Olaf, a Senior Consultant from Munich Airport International, who has overseen the master planning processes for more than 13 airports worldwide.

The event aims to raise awareness of the relevance and application of airport master planning, with the ultimate goal of creating a group of experts capable of managing and implementing the plan once it is finalized.

In his opening remarks, Acting Director General of the CAA, Capt. Chris Najomo, highlighted the significance of the master planning process.

He affirmed that the Ministry, CAA, and FAAN’s involvement demonstrates the administration’s commitment to aviation development, which aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda.

Capt. Najomo urged participants to fully engage in the workshop, stressing that a well-executed masterplan would ensure a safer and more sustainable aviation sector.

The workshop was attended by representatives from the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace, FAAN, various aviation agencies, and several state airport authorities across Nigeria.
