The Director of Aviation Security Services, ACP Afegbai Albert Igbafe, has outlined the measures being taken by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to enhance airport security.

In an interview, he spoke about the challenges facing the agency, including the ICAO audit, perimeter fencing, and monitoring private airlines.

Addressing ICAO Audit Issues

When asked about the ICAO audit, ACP Igbafe revealed that the agency had identified several issues when he took office. To address these issues, FAAN has been working to provide amenities such as CCTV cameras and upgrade existing ones. The agency is also implementing access control measures to ensure that only authorized personnel have access to the airport.

Perimeter Fencing Challenges

Regarding the perimeter fencing, ACP Igbafe acknowledged that it is a major challenge. He explained that the fencing has been damaged by neighboring communities, leading to encroachments. To address this issue, FAAN has been conducting joint patrols with the military, Air Force, and AVSEC personnel. The agency has also launched an armed unit to enhance security.

Monitoring Private Airlines

On the issue of private airlines, ACP Igbafe revealed that the Minister has launched a task force to investigate private jet owners. He emphasized that FAAN is monitoring their activities to ensure compliance with regulations.

Fast Track System

To enhance passenger experience, FAAN is introducing a fast track system, which will allow passengers to undergo swift and seamless screening.

He emphasized that this system will not be limited to VIPs, but will be available to all passengers who want to expedite their screening process.

Embracing Modern Technology

The Director highlighted FAAN’s efforts to adopt modern technology, including the introduction of a database system to track staff certifications and training.

He also mentioned that the agency is exploring the use of artificial intelligence to enhance security, including the use of AI-powered cameras to detect weapons and other prohibited items.

Other Achievements

Since taking office, ACP Igbafe has achieved several milestones, including gazetting AVSEC personnel uniforms, training staff, and reopening the second international runway.

He expressed confidence that by December, FAAN will have a new face and a more secure airport.
