….to engage stakeholders
The Managing Director, Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), Engr. Ahmed Farouk Umar, has defended the agency’s proposed increase in navigation charges, explaining that the move is necessitated by soaring operational costs.
Umar, giving clarification in an interview on the proposed navigation charges hike announced at the recent League of Airports and Aviation Correspondents, LAAC Conference in Lagos, said, the proposed adjustment would be levied per flight and not per passenger ticket, as widely misconstrued.
He emphasized that the current charge of N11,000 per flight, introduced in 2008, has become grossly inadequate to sustain the agency’s operations.
“We understand the economic challenges faced by airlines, but our costs have also skyrocketed,” Umar stated.
“The misconception that we are adding to ticket prices is unfounded. We are simply seeking to align our charges with the realities of today’s aviation industry.”
The NAMA boss pointed out that while airline ticket prices have surged to between N150,000 and N200,000 for a one-way economy ticket, the proposed increase in navigation charges would amount to less than a third of that amount.
He stressed that the agency’s services are crucial for ensuring the safety of air travel, and the proposed adjustment is essential for maintaining the required infrastructure and personnel.
Following a backlash to the initial announcement, Umar revealed that the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo had directed NAMA to engage with stakeholders to address their concerns.
He expressed optimism that through dialogue, the agency would be able to explain the rationale behind the proposed increase and gain their support.
Umar reiterated, “Safety is paramount in aviation”.
“We cannot compromise on the safety of air travel, and adequate funding is essential to maintain our services at the highest standards.”
