The Managing Director/Chief Executive of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, has emphasized the need for multistakeholder engagement to improve the viability of Nigeria’s airports.

Speaking at the 9th Airport Business Summit and Expo 2024, Mrs. Kuku highlighted the challenges faced by the aviation sector, including the need to increase airport revenue, expand air connectivity, and develop infrastructure.

According to Mrs. Kuku, only three of the 22 airports under FAAN’s management are currently financially viable, with the majority operating below capacity.

To address this, she proposed a holistic approach that involves engaging all relevant stakeholders, including government agencies, private sector players, airlines, local communities, and international partners.

Mrs. Kuku emphasized the importance of partnerships with State Governments and private sector players, citing successful examples from airports like Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru, India.

She also stressed the need for route development and expansion, citing the success of airports like Changi Airport in Singapore and Incheon International Airport in South Korea.

The FAAN Chief Executive also harped on the importance of infrastructural development, regulatory considerations, and innovative solutions to improve airport viability.

She noted that FAAN is committed to exploring creative and innovative solutions, including diversifying revenue streams, community engagement, and sustainability initiatives.

Mrs. urged all stakeholders to work together to transform Nigeria’s airports into vibrant hubs of economic activity that drive national development and connect Nigeria to the world.
