……..Urged to Disburse Outstanding ₦34 Billion Owed to Ex-Nigeria Airways Staff
The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN) has issued a fervent plea for the exemption of aviation agencies from the deduction of 50% of their Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) under the Fiscal Responsibility Act.
This call was made during a symposium held in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, where the NEC highlighted the detrimental impact of the deduction on the performance of statutory agencies, particularly in fulfilling their safety and security mandates.
The NEC also urged the government to promptly disburse the outstanding ₦34 Billion owed to ex-Nigeria Airways staff.
The delay in payment has not only inflicted financial hardship but has also taken an emotional toll on the affected individuals, who were promised a better future post-airline collapse.
During the symposium, various pressing issues affecting aviation workers were addressed:
Conditions of Service: The NEC expressed dissatisfaction with the outdated conditions of service for aviation agencies, calling for their immediate review to align with current economic realities.
Airport Concession: Commending the government’s decision to retain the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) headquarters in Abuja, the NEC stressed the importance of providing necessary infrastructure for a seamless relocation.
Labour Issues: Transparent concession processes and resolution of labour disputes were emphasized as crucial for maintaining harmony in the aviation sector.
Private Sector Compliance: The NEC called for adherence to collective bargaining agreements by private sector employers to prevent industrial crises and urged government intervention to ensure compliance.
Career Stagnation: The high rate of career stagnation among aviation officers was condemned, with a call for stakeholder meetings to address the issue.
Funding of Safety Bureau: The NEC urged inter-ministerial collaboration to ensure adequate funding for the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) to fulfill its mandate.
Ibom Airport Development Company Limited: The Akwa Ibom state government was urged to honor commitments regarding pension and gratuity rights of workers at the Victor Attah International Airport.
Union-Management Partnership: Emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts, the NEC reiterated the role of unions as partners in advancing the interests of both workers and companies.
In conclusion, the NEC underscored the urgency for government action on these critical issues to ensure the sustainable growth and development of the aviation industry in Nigeria.
