The newly appointed president of the Domestic Air Cargo Agents Association (DACAA), Mr. Godwin Obasuyi, has called on aviation authorities to provide better infrastructure and support for cargo operations.

Speaking during the inauguration of the new DACAA executives and 21st  anniversary celebration in Lagos, Obasuyi expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead DACAA, reiterated the association’s 21-year contribution to the aviation sector.

He reaffirmed the commitment of DACAA to fostering innovation, inclusivity, and collaboration in its operations.

Obasuyi pointed out the vital role DACAA plays in cargo transportation, revealing that its members handle between 70 to 80 tons of cargo per week.

He stressed that the revenue generated from port charges and cargo operations should not be overlooked, urging the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and other stakeholders to address the challenges faced by cargo agents.

One of the primary concerns raised by Obasuyi is the lack of a permanent operational space for DACAA members, which has forced them to operate under difficult conditions without government support.

He appealed to FAAN and relevant aviation authorities to intervene by providing a conducive and stable work environment to enhance efficiency and sustain their contributions to the industry.

“We have contributed immensely to the labor force and provide essential services across the nation. Yet, we have suffered neglect for too long,” Obasuyi stated.

“It is time for authorities to recognize our efforts and support us with the necessary infrastructure to ensure smooth operations.”

However, DACAA faces substantial hurdles, Chairman, Board of Trustees, Sir John Ekeanya specifically pointed to the need for improved cargo processing and storage structures at airports.

“Cargo processing and storage structures in all airports should be considered, including but not limited to availability of storage facilities, cold rooms, weighing equipment, screening machines, etc.,” he stressed.

He called on the Federal Government, through the Minister of Aviation, Mr. Festus Keyamo, to consider domestic cargo handlers in a robust aviation blueprint.

“Our leaders (DACAA) should be made to make input in creating a robust Aviation industry,” Ekeanya asserted.

He also addressed the association’s internal affairs, acknowledging the “tough decisions” made by the outgoing executive.

The board chair emphasized the importance of “healing and reconciliation” and urged the newly elected executive to “take DACAA to a higher height by maintaining the ethos and ethics we have enshrined during our short stay.”

Ekeanya also affirmed the association’s commitment to democratic transitions, noting, “We have made sure at the expiration of the tenure of any incumbent Executive, an election will take place. This, we trust, has come to stay.”

The event ended with the presentation of awards to Dr. Lucky Omokhodion, MD/CEO, Ehi Multisystems Nigeria Limited, as the grand patron of DACAA for his dedication, sacrifice and selfless service to the growth and development of the association.
