In a major breakthrough, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted a large quantity of exotic cannabis drugs hidden inside mattresses at the Tincan Island Port Strategic Command in Lagos.
According to Commander Mitchell Ofoyeju, the illicit consignment was discovered during a routine search of import containers that originated from Montreal, Canada.
A total of 63.75 kilograms of cannabis indica were recovered, with 128 parcels of dried weeds hidden in two big mattresses and three parcels in the trunk of a Toyota Venza.
The seizure is attributed to the growing appetite of drug users for Canadian-grown cannabis, which is considered more potent and exotic than locally produced cannabis.
The price of imported cannabis is also higher, making it a lucrative business for drug traffickers.
Commander Mitchell praised the diligence and teamwork of his officers, saying that the seizure was made possible through meticulous surveillance and search operations.
He also highlighted the need for international collaboration to prevent the illicit importation of drugs.
The suspected receiver of the shipment, Bamidele Joseph, is currently in custody and being questioned as part of an ongoing investigation.
The NDLEA has pledged to remain vigilant in eradicating the illicit flow of narcotic drugs in the country and is urging the public to provide any information related to drug trafficking activities.
The Chairman of the NDLEA, Brig. General Mohamed Buba Marwa, expressed satisfaction with the discovery and urged officers to continue their efforts to ensure a drug-abuse-free nation.
The agency has vowed to deal with those found guilty of drug trafficking according to the NDLEA Act, in a bid to discourage further involvement in the illegal trade.
