The Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited (BASL), Mr. Remi Jibodu, has reaffirmed the company’s commitment to expanding operations at Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal 2 (MMA2).

Speaking during a visit by the League of Airport and Aviation Correspondents (LAAC), Jibodu highlighted BASL’s ongoing efforts to maximize the terminal’s vast space while strengthening its role in Nigeria’s aviation industry.

With over 100 tenants already operating within the terminal, Jibodu revealed that the number continues to grow, with another bank set to establish a presence soon.

He stressed that MMA2 is more than just an airport facility, serving as a commercial hub that welcomes between 10,000 and 15,000 visitors daily.

Urging the government to support further expansion initiatives that align with the terminal’s development.

Strengthening Cargo Operations

BASL is also focused on enhancing cargo operations, particularly in cold storage logistics.

The COO noted that Nigeria still relies heavily on road transport for perishable goods, a method that poses significant risks.

To address this challenge, he said BASL launched a cold storage facility last year to integrate into the country’s cargo supply chain.

He further disclosed that discussions are ongoing with potential investors to establish a dedicated freighter system, which would help facilitate the movement and redistribution of goods across Nigeria.

Call for Airport Management Expansion

Reflecting on BASL’s achievements in managing MMA2 for the past 18 years, Jibodu advocated for the company to be given the “first right of refusal” in managing any additional airport in Nigeria.

He asserted that BASL’s proven expertise could be extended to other airports within the country and even across West Africa.

Passenger Traffic and Economic Challenges

Discussing passenger traffic trends, Jibodu acknowledged fluctuations over the past year, citing the departure of Dana Air and economic instability as key factors.

He observed a decline in traffic between April and late 2023 due to soaring fuel prices, which reached ₦4,000 per liter at one point.

However, he noted that traffic began improving by October and expressed optimism for better performance in 2024, given the recent stabilization of the foreign exchange rate at around ₦1,400 per dollar.

The BASL COO also commended the federal government for implementing the Cape Town Convention (CTC) practice in Nigeria, which he believes will boost the aviation industry.

He explained that CTC would enable airlines to access dry leases more easily, reducing costs and providing flexibility in utilizing local pilots and crew instead of relying on expensive foreign personnel.

The Need for Trade Centers and Route Expansion

To further support the aviation sector’s growth, Jibodu advised the government to develop trade centers at key airport locations.

He argued that for airlines to increase capacity on underutilized routes, there must be sufficient economic activity to sustain demand.

While major routes like Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt are well-serviced, other areas lack the necessary trade and business activities to justify expanded airline operations.

Jibodu emphasized that airports should serve as economic hubs, connecting businesses and facilitating trade.

“The first thing that must happen is to establish trade centers, and the airport is key to ensuring connectivity where economic activities already exist,” he stated.

Commitment to Seamless Passenger Experience

Beyond infrastructure and expansion, Jibodu reiterated BASL’s dedication to ensuring a seamless passenger experience at MMA2.

He highlighted the company’s efforts to maintain smooth transitions from parking areas to boarding gates while leveraging the terminal’s extensive space for additional services and commercial activities.

As BASL continues to expand its footprint, Jibodu stated that, the company remains focused on innovation, infrastructure development, and strategic partnerships to strengthen Nigeria’s aviation sector and enhance connectivity across the region.

In response, the Chairman of LAAC, Mr. Idris Suleiman, commended BASL for its commitment to operational excellence.

He urged the company to continue prioritizing passenger comfort and enhancing facilitation processes in collaboration with airlines.

Suleiman reaffirmed LAAC’s support for BASL and called for a mutually beneficial relationship between the organization and the league.
