The National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers, (NAAPE)
says its Annual Aviation Safety Award (AASA) is not to de-market any
organization but to motivate organizations to imbibe and entrench
safety culture.
President of NAAPE, Abednego Galadima, stated this at the Aviation
Stakeholders Safety Workshop held in Lagos with the Theme,”Promoting
Aviation Safety in Nigeria”.
He noted that the safety thinking over the years since 1950s where technical factors were the only consideration and later in the 1990s
human factors gained prominence over technical factors, stressing that no organisational factors were considered more prominent and critical.
According to him, the assessments for the award would focus more on
the organisational factors while the selection and Ranking process
would be coordinated by a board of eminent and impartial professionals
from the aviation industry.
“The awards are not aimed at de-marketing any organization but to
motivate organisations to imbibe and entrench safety culture.
Remember, safety is everyone’s business”.
Galadima explained that the safety workshop was aimed at interacting
with stakeholders on the evaluation index they intended to use in
their Ranking and Awards, adding that it was also intended to serve as
a platform for sensitization and discussion on other pressing safety
concerns in the industry.
“It is my hope that our engagement will bring about solutions to identify safety concerns and greater promotion of safety in the industry”.
While appreciating social partners for their cooperation and support towards the actualization of this noble objective of promoting safety
in the aviation industry, urged President Muhammadu Buhari to use
second term in office to actualize the realization of second Abuja
Runway project, Nigeria Air and other laudable projects as contained
in the Aviation Roadmap document.
Galadima observed that over three decades, “NAAPE has been firm in its
advocacy for the rights, privileges and welfare of Nigerian pilots and
aircraft engineers o the one hand, and enduring professionalism and
professional excellence on the other hand, while promoting safety of
the aviation industry”.
“Just like our logo states ‘We do it right for safety’ this clearly
demonstrates that safety is one of our topmost priorities”, he added.
