UK ends final restrictions for carry-on PEDs

The UK government has removed its remaining restrictions on the carriage of large personal electronic devices (PEDs) on flights from certain Middle Eastern countries.

Devices such as large mobile phones, laptops and tablet computers were banned from the cabins of UK-bound airliners in March 2017 over fears that terrorists had perfected methods of miniaturizing and inserting explosive devices into PEDs.

However, the UK’s Department for Transport (DfT) now says restrictions on flights from Jeddah and Riyadh airports in Saudi Arabia and Beirut airport in Lebanon have been lifted.

The three locations were the last of 15 Middle East airports that were initially subjects of the crackdown. The DfT said the final restrictions had been lifted “after working with the aviation industry and international partners to introduce tough additional security measures.”
