The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, has directed the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to release a public statement by the end of tomorrow, latest, regarding the refund of money paid by passengers to some airlines who suspended operations recently.
The public statement is expected to provide clarity on the NCAA’s stance on the matter and what steps are being taken to ensure that affected passengers receive their refunds.
Speaking at the launch of NCAA Consumer Protection Portal in Lagos Thursday, Keyamo emphasized that the public should be informed about the status of refunds for passengers who purchased tickets from airlines that have since gone out of business.
He urged the airlines to come clean about their plans to refund the affected passengers, stating that it is a matter of consumer protection.
The Minister expressed sympathy for passengers who have been left in the lurch, saying that it is unacceptable for airlines to ignore their obligations to refund money paid for services that were not provided.
He urged the NCAA to take a firm stance on the issue and hold airlines accountable for their actions.
In an interview, the NCAA’s Acting Director General, Civil Aviation, Capt. Chris Najomo, providing an update on the status of passenger refunds for the defunct airline said, the airline in question has already responded to concerns and has made plans for the refund process.
According to him, the airline has agreed to work with the taking-over airline to facilitate the refund of passengers’ money.
Capt. Najomo confirmed that Consumer Protection officers are currently working with the airline to ensure that the necessary steps are taken to refund affected passengers.
“We are already in it, and the airline has responded, plans have been made for the refund purposes, and the airline will be interfacing with the taking-over airline to do the needful for our passengers.”
