The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has launched a full investigation into the emergency return of a Hawker aircraft to Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (DNAA) in Abuja on December 6, 2024, citing engine failure and thrust anomalies.

A preliminary report released by the NSIB today attributed the incident to malfunctions in both engines of the aircraft, operated by Flybird Aircraft Management Services Limited.

The aircraft, carrying three crew members and one passenger, was en route to Kotoka International Airport (DGAA) in Accra, Ghana.

According to the NSIB, the incident occurred during the aircraft’s climb to flight level 260. The crew reported a “loud bang” from Engine Number 2, accompanied by a sudden temperature increase and significant vibrations.

The crew immediately reduced engine power and declared an emergency, requesting an air return to Abuja.

“While descending, Engine Number 2 experienced a second temperature spike, and the flight crew subsequently observed that Engine Number 1 was unresponsive to thrust commands,” the NSIB report stated.

The NSIB has recommended a detailed inspection of both engines to determine the root cause of the incident, as well as a thorough review of the engine maintenance records.

“Our priority is to understand the sequence of events that led to this incident and to identify any safety recommendations that can prevent similar occurrences in the future,” a spokesperson for the NSIB said.

Despite the serious engine malfunctions, the aircraft landed safely at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport at 18:16 local time. All four occupants disembarked without injury, and no damage to the aircraft’s airframe was reported.

The investigation is ongoing, and a final report will be released upon completion.
