Six Injured, Passengers Traumatized in United Airlines Emergency

….due to Technical Glitch 

A United Airlines Boeing 787-800, carrying 245 passengers and 11 crew members, made an emergency return to Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos early this morning.

The aircraft, which departed Lagos at 23:59 on Thursday, January 23, 2025, declared an emergency at 01:20 and landed safely at 03:22.

Upon landing, a statement by the Director, Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, Mrs Obiageli Orah says, emergency services, including Aerodrome Rescue and Fire Fighting Services (ARFFS), Aviation Medical, and Aviation Security (AVSEC), were already on standby. 

All passengers and crew disembarked safely, however, six individuals sustained serious injuries, and 32 reported minor injuries.

The injured were transported to local hospitals for treatment. Some passengers were also provided with hotel accommodations.

Orah stated that,  aircraft itself did not suffer any major damage.

As to the cause of the emergency air return, the airline says, was due to technical issues.

It notes that, Flight UA613, a Boeing 787-8 carrying 245 passengers, eight flight attendants, and three pilots, experienced the technical issue while flying over Ivorian airspace.
