The Ogun State government has pledged its support for a new initiative to train local youths in aviation careers.

This commitment was made during a courtesy visit by Engr. Segun Adesanya, Managing Director of Santos Aviation Ltd, to the Government House in Abeokuta.

Chief of Staff to the Governor, Dr. Oluwatoyin Taiwo, assured Adesanya of the government’s backing for his proposed aviation development project.

Dr. Taiwo highlighted the potential of the newly built Ogun Airport at Iperu, Remo, urging Santos MD to capitalize on the investment opportunity.

Commissioner for Transport, Gbenga Dairo, provided further details about the airport, stating that its runway can accommodate wide-bodied aircraft.

He confirmed that the airport currently operates as a sunset airport, with ongoing efforts to secure 24-hour cargo operations once the necessary equipment arrives.

According to the Commissioner, light aircraft are already utilizing the facility, and anticipates commercial flight approvals from the NCAA within the next few months.

He praised Adesanya, an Ogun State indigene, and mentioned the government’s plans to introduce aviation courses into technical institutions to encourage youth participation in the sector.

In his response, the Santos boss explained his vision to contribute to youth development through technology transfer in aviation.

He proposed a partnership with local technical schools and polytechnics to provide 18-month training programs under FAA certificates in areas like airframe mechanics.

Graduates of the program, endorsed by Santos Aviation, would be eligible to pursue an Airframe License from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) after passing the required examination.

Adesanya emphasized the need for more Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facilities in Nigeria, noting that the lack of such facilities hinders the practical experience of trained engineers.

He believes establishing an MRO at Ogun Airport would alleviate pressure on the congested Lagos airport and stimulate Ogun State’s economy, citing the limited expansion opportunities in Lagos, positioning Ogun State as a more viable alternative.

The Santos MD brings over four decades of aviation experience to the table, including work as an aircraft engineer with Delta Airlines.

He founded Santos Aviation Ltd in the United States, a company specializing in aircraft management, interior refurbishing, and worldwide cargo operations.
