The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has launched an on-site investigation into the crash-landing of a Diamond training aircraft at General Tunde Idiagbon International Airport in Ilorin.
The incident occurred on May 23, 2025, at 17:28 local time, during a simulated instrument approach on Runway 05.
NSIB Director General, Captain Alex Badeh Jr., visited the crash site on May 24, 2025, to assess the situation and oversee the initial phase of the investigation, confirming that the aircraft’s data card has been recovered and analysis has commenced.
According to Captain Badeh Jr., investigators are working diligently, with the damaged aircraft positioned on the left side of the runway and recovery operations nearing completion.
A team of specialists will remain on site to complete critical measurements before returning to Abuja.
The data card will be analyzed at NSIB’s transport safety laboratory to support the Bureau’s findings and inform safety recommendations, with a preliminary report expected to be released within 30 days.
Captain Badeh Jr. emphasized the Bureau’s commitment to a thorough and transparent process, aiming to determine the cause of the incident and identify measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Fortunately, both occupants of the aircraft are conscious, coherent, and in stable condition, with one having undergone an MRI scan and both receiving appropriate medical care.
The NSIB has assured the public that the country’s airspace remains safe, with further updates to be provided as the investigation progresses.
The Bureau’s investigation is ongoing, with a focus on ensuring the safety and security of Nigeria’s aviation sector.
