Prof. Matazu to Boost West Africa’s Disaster Resilience at ECOWAS

The African Centre of Meteorological Application for Development (ACMAD), the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Regional Climate Centre for Africa, has extended its warm congratulations to Professor Mansur Matazu on his significant new appointment. 

ACMAD is the WMO Regional Climate Centre for Africa, based in Niamey Niger Republic

Professor Matazu has been named an Expert on Early Warning and Disaster Management Operations at the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, a role based at the ECOWAS Disaster Operations Center in Abuja, Nigeria.

He brings a wealth of experience to his new position. 

Prior to this appointment, he served as an Expert in Climate Services Applications at ACMAD, based in Niamey. In this capacity, he was instrumental in developing and implementing crucial climate services that benefited numerous African nations. 

His work at ACMAD focused on delivering vital climate information and services to support decision-making across diverse sectors, including agriculture, health, and disaster risk reduction.

Before his tenure at ACMAD, Professor Matazu held the esteemed position of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet). 

During his leadership at NiMet, he played a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s meteorological services, overseeing the development of the agency’s strategic plan to enhance its capacity for accurate and reliable weather forecasts and warnings, thereby supporting national development.

Beyond his roles at NiMet and ACMAD, Professor Matazu has also served as Chairman of the ACMAD Board, offering strategic guidance and oversight to the organization. 

His leadership and technical expertise have been crucial in steering ACMAD’s direction and advocating for the use of climate services for sustainable development throughout Africa.

In his new role at ECOWAS, Professor Matazu will be responsible for providing essential technical expertise and support to member states regarding early warning and disaster management operations. 

He is set to collaborate closely with national authorities, regional organizations, and international partners to bolster disaster risk reduction and climate resilience across West Africa.

ACMAD expressed profound confidence that Professor Matazu’s extensive technical expertise and experience will enable him to make a significant contribution to strengthening disaster risk reduction and climate resilience in West Africa. 

This appointment stands as a testament to his expertise and unwavering commitment to promoting sustainable development and disaster risk reduction on the continent, with his work at ECOWAS anticipated to be critical in supporting the region’s efforts to build resilience to climate-related disasters and foster sustainable development.
