….seeks Nigeria Airways payout
On the occasion of the 2025 global Workers’ Day celebration, the National President of the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), Comrade Ben Nnabue, has commended the resilience and proficiency of aviation workers.
In his speech to mark the day, he also acknowledged the significant contributions of aviation investors, whose risk-taking and business acumen have enabled the industry to thrive.
However, the NUATE president also used the day to lists many concerns and obstacles hindering the industry’s growth.
These include the federal government’s deduction of 50% of total internally generated revenue from aviation agencies, the lack of clarity on labour issues in the airports concession program, and the absence of governing boards in government agencies.
Comrade Nnabue further expressed worries about the poor remuneration of workers in private aviation services, the underpricing of labour, and the prevalence of slave labour conditions.
He called on the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to address these issues urgently, warning of a potential crisis in the sector.
The NUATE president also berated domestic airlines for denying workers the right to belong to trade unions and announced plans to take action against Turkish Airlines for victimizing staff who are union members.
He vowed to resist indecent labor practices, including contract employment and casualization of employment.
Comrade Nnabue appealed to members to rededicate themselves to the union’s cause and to employers to prioritize workers’ welfare.
He emphasized the importance of dedicated work and fair wages for laborers, urging all stakeholders to work together to address the challenges facing the aviation industry.
In the coming days, NUATE president reveals plans are on to engage with the Ministry of Finance to facilitate the payment of outstanding debts to former Nigeria Airways workers and to push for the establishment of a new national carrier.
