The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) has hailed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership in the successful revitalization of the Port Harcourt Refinery, a move that is expected to boost Nigeria’s energy security and economic growth.
The refinery, which has an initial processing capacity of 60,000 barrels of crude oil per day, has resumed operations after a comprehensive rehabilitation under the leadership of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).
The project is set to reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imported refined petroleum products and strengthen local refining capabilities.
Engr. Margaret Aina Oguntala, FNSE, President of the NSE, commended the Federal Government’s commitment to rejuvenating vital infrastructure, saying,
“The reopening of the Port Harcourt Refinery underscores the government’s dedication to achieving self-sufficiency in petroleum refining and enhancing Nigeria’s energy independence.”
The NSE also highlighted the crucial role played by Nigerian engineers in the project’s success, saying, “This milestone underscores the exceptional expertise and dedication of Nigerian engineers, showcasing our capacity to deliver large-scale, impactful projects.”
The Society expressed confidence that the rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt Refinery will spur further growth in Nigeria’s industrial sector, generating job opportunities, promoting economic diversification, and enhancing local capacity.
“This significant achievement exemplifies the power of collaboration among government agencies, private sector stakeholders, and professional bodies in driving the nation’s development forward,” said Engr. Oguntala.
The NSE reaffirmed its dedication to promoting engineering excellence and supporting initiatives that harness Nigerian talent for sustainable national development.
