The President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Engr. Margaret Oguntala, FNSE, has underlined the significance of codes and standards for engineering professionals in Nigeria.
Engr. Oguntala made the statement at the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) conference held at the NAF Conference Centre in Abuja.
The conference, theme “Adherence to Standard Practices: The Bedrock of Sustainable Development in the Building Sector,” is part of the global World Quality Week celebration, which promotes quality standards.
The NSE President praised SON’s initiative and described the theme as timely, highlighting the importance of standards and codes for engineering professionals and their role in ensuring safe and effective practices.
She also commended the society’s ongoing progress toward ISO certification, emphasizing NSE’s commitment to achieving international standards and best practices.
Engr. Oguntala called for strengthened partnership between NSE and SON to advance quality standards in Nigeria’s engineering and construction sectors.
In his remarks, the President of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), Engr. S.Z. Abubakar, FNSE, represented by Vice President Engr. Olu Oguduyile, FNSE, outlined SON’s responsibilities, including developing standards for products, processes, and services, as well as maintaining laboratories and providing standardization guidance to the government.
He acknowledged the collaboration between SON, NSE, and other stakeholders, emphasizing the need to adapt standards to Nigeria’s unique environmental and industry-specific conditions.
The conference aimed to promote quality standards and adherence to standard practices in the building sector, with the ultimate goal of achieving sustainable development in Nigeria.
