The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has officially endorsed the “Propel Reprotection System,” a groundbreaking client-based solution poised to transform how Nigerian airlines manage flight disruptions.

Unveiled by a consortium of industry leaders, the new tech-powered platform aims to provide seamless re-protection for passengers affected by operational, weather-related, and other unforeseen issues, ensuring minimal revenue loss for airlines and elevated passenger satisfaction.

Director General, Civil Aviation, Captain Chris Najomo, lauded the Propel Reprotection System as a product of powerful collaboration designed to boost efficiency in air travel.

The consortium behind this innovative solution comprises Aviation Assist Hub, an aviation operations and support logistics firm; Aviation Technology Solutions (Avitech), the technology engine powering the platform; and Leadway Assurance, serving as the financial protection and funding partner.

The DGCA, represented at the unveiling by the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mr. Michael Achimugu, emphasized the critical importance of the new system.

“We are on the threshold of history of what we are able to achieve. The Honourable Minister wants flight disruptions reduced to the barest minimum. In this industry, the passenger is the reason every other stakeholder exists. They are entitled, therefore, to better services and in accordance with global best standards.”

The NCAA confirmed that numerous domestic carriers have already expressed strong interest in the Propel solution and are in discussions with the promoters regarding integration methods.

This widespread buy-in is expected to significantly reduce instances of flight delays, ensure a more seamless flight experience, and improve confidence among Nigerian airlines.

Captain Najomo reiterated NCAA’s commitment to consumer rights, declaring, “This is why we are proud to introduce to you, the PROPEL solution as initiated by Aero Assist Hub. If they secure your buy-in, and I hope they do, we may just make history by fixing the most critical aspect of civil aviation in Nigeria.”

The promoters have earmarked August for a pilot rollout, anticipating the new solution will be a “game changer” for the aviation industry.

Managing Director of Aero Assist Hub, Mr. Olumide Ojutalayo, explained that the consortium has meticulously crafted this solution to provide a definitive answer to the pervasive problem of flight disruptions in Nigeria.

He highlighted that the initiative is backed by financial support, acknowledging that many airlines operate on thin margins and often face difficulties during disruptions.

“We are trying to also ease their cash flow, support that immediately for them to build with this brilliant well-thought-out solution”.

The pilot scheme is expected to run for eight months, with ongoing refinements based on feedback from airlines and stakeholders.

Head of Legal Unit at Aero Assist Hub, Funke Junaid, underscored the solution’s focus on customer rights. While contractual partnerships will be between the airlines and the Propel consortium, existing customer rights under NCAA regulations remain fully protected.

“It is a win-win for the industry,” she stated, noting the keen interest shown by airlines during the extensive feedback session.

A representative of Leadway Assurance, Diana Mulili, detailed how the Propel platform, an “insurance-led solution,” was co-created with industry stakeholders, including frustrated passengers.

She explained that a minimal insurance premium guarantees passengers an alternative flight on another airline should a disruption occur, with the consortium managing all the backend logistics.

“Passengers don’t even want their money. They just want to get to their destination, and that is actually what PROPEL is providing, helping passengers get to their destination, regardless of their flight delays and cancellations experienced.”

She added that the robust platform built with Avitech can adapt to various airline technological ecosystems, ensuring seamless integration and ease of use.
