In an effort to effectively and efficiently secure the Nigeria borders, the Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS is to acquire helicopters and drones for aerial border patrol.
This is just the Service is to introduce what is called E-Gate(Electronic Gate) to ease entry for citizens of Nigeria.
Acting Comptroller General, NIS, Mrs Caroline Wura-Ola Adepoju disclosed this at the sideline of a one-day Retreat organized by the Lagos International Airport NIS Command under Comptroller Adeola Adesokan.
The NIS boss said, among the equipment for surveillance to be purchased are helicopters and drones, adding that, the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubumni Tunji Ojo is passionate about border security in Nigeria.
According to her, the purchase of these equipment have been put into the budget.
“We are doing everything we can to ensure that NIS gets its aircraft back, we used to have aircraft for border surveillance. We are going to buy aircraft, we will buy drones, we are going to buy helicopters to ensure that we effectively do aerial border management”
On the E-Gate, she said, “Very soon NIS would be deploying the e-gate to make it seamless for our nationals to come in, make it less stressful”.
Explaining further, the Ag. NIS CG said, the electronic gate once it ascertain the passengers biometric as a Nigerian he/she automatically is allowed to come in.
“For example our nationals may not need, except they are persons of interest, to be attended to by immigration officers. Once you are a Nigerian coming in there is this e-gate once you place your passport, it would read it, ascertain your identity through biometric and once you are identified, you can come in”.
