NIMPORT: Climate change Serious challenge to Maritime sector..NiMet

The Director General/CEO of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, Prof. Mansur Bako Matazu says weather related hazards such as coastal flooding, ice and ice berg and sea level rise constitute serious challenge to the maritime sector especially in the era of climate change.

Prof. Matazu, said this during the presentation of a paper titled: ‘The Essence of Meteorological Services in the Maritime Sector’, at the 2022 edition of the NIMPORT Conference and Exhibition at Nigav Center, Murtala Mohammed international Airport Lagos.

Matazu, who was represented by the Director, Applied Meteorological Services, Prof. Charles Anosike stressed the importance of Met service in maritime, stating that it’s role is recognized under the dictates of international convention for safety of lives and was adopted in 1912.

Explaining the climate weather chart, he said that climate change affect virtually everything in the maritime sector, adding that weather related hazards such as coastal flooding, ice and ice berg and sea level rise poses serious challenge to the sector especially in this era of climate change.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Chairman NIMPORT, Mr. Fortune Idu disclosed that NIMPORT has continued to create innovative programmes and campaigns that have helped to direct policy programmes and projects in the maritime transportation industry, free trade zone and general logistics.

According Idu, the annual event has become the hallmark for information sharing between government and the private sector, offering opportunity for all interest groups to air their opinions and delegates to listen to leaders whose activities and operations have direct influence on international trade, logistics and supply chain management.

The theme for this year, ‘Optimising the Potentials of Maritime Corridor for Wealth Creation’ focuses on consolidating on the conference discussion of NIMPORT 2021 on business recovery and international trade restoration.
