NiMet Advocates Collaboration And Partnership at COP27 in Egypt

The issue of Climate Change has occupied the front burner in global discuss in recent times, the reason is not far fetched as it has been discovered that climate change affects virtually all aspects of human activities.

It shapes decision making whether at the state, national, regional or global level.
This accounts for the establishment of the United Nations Climate Change Conference or Conference of the Parties, commonly referred to as COP.

The 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference or Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, UNFCCC, referred to as COP27, is the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference and is being held from 6 November until 18 November 2022 in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. 

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet, in its presentation advocated  collaboration and partnership to tackle the climate change challenge.

The presentation, which was in three segments had the Director of Weather Forecasting, Engr Mailadi Yusuf Abba speaks on Collaboration And Partnership, while Director Research and Training.

While Prof. Effiom Oku spoke on Capacity Development And Opportunities and the Technical Assistant to the Director General/CEO, Idowu Oluwaseun Wilfred,  made a presentation on NiMet Products And Services.

The well attended event had the General Manager, Public Relations in NiMet, Mr Muntari Yusuf as the Master of Ceremony.

Other dignitaries that attended the event include the SSA to the President on Climate Change Council Engr. Hassan Musa, the Director-General,  Ghana Meteorological Agency,Mr. Eric Asuman, Professor Christopher L. Castro from the University of Arizona, USA.

Others are, Dr. Albert A.E. Martins, World Meteorological Organisation WMO, 3rd Vice President & WMO Permanent Representative of Curaçao & St. Maarten, the Permanent Representative of The Gambia, the SA to the Hon. Minister of Agriculture, and Commissioner for Environmental, Kogi State.

The first COP was held in 1995, after 197 countries ratified the UNFCCC. This milestone set the stage for future protocols and national agreements to curb greenhouse gas emissions.

The Sharm el-Sheikh Climate Change Conference (COP 27), brings countries together to take action towards achieving the world’s collective climate goals as agreed under the Paris Agreement and the Convention and building on the outcomes and momentum of COP 26 in Glasgow last year.
