The Nigerian Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) and the National Association of Air Traffic Engineers (NAAE) have issued a threat to embark on a nationwide strike if the Federal Government does not reverse its policy of deducting 50% of their internally generated revenue (IGR).
The two professional bodies in the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, NAMA, argue that this policy is severely hindering the operations of aviation agencies, compromising safety standards, and impacting the overall efficiency of the Nigerian aviation sector.
The presidents of both associations, Mr. Abayomi Agoro and Engr. Selzing Miri, respectively, stressed the negative consequences of the revenue deductions, which include, financial constraints, limiting the ability of aviation agencies to procure necessary equipment, maintain facilities, and train their personnel.
Others are safety risks, stating that, the lack of adequate resources has compromised safety standards in the sector, leading to concerns about potential incidents or accidents and operational disruptions as financial challenges have affected the day-to-day operations of aviation agencies, leading to delays and disruptions in air travel.
The professional bodies warned that a strike would have severe consequences for the aviation sector and the general public, including flight cancellations, delays, and economic losses.
They urged the Federal Government to reconsider its policy and prioritize the funding of aviation agencies to ensure the safety and efficiency of the sector.
The strike is scheduled to commence on September 18, 2024, unless the Federal Government takes action to address the unions’ demands.
