The Chief Operating Officer of Ibom Air, Mr. George Uriesi has urged stakeholders in Nigeria’s aviation industry to adopt a coordinated approach to develop the country’s air cargo sector.
In paper presentation entitled, “The role of airlines in the development of air cargo”, the one-day 4th CHINET Aviacargo conference in Lagos, Uriesi highlighted the significant role played by airlines in the global movement of goods and the untapped potential of Nigeria’s air cargo market.
Despite the country’s high demand for products and the availability of empty return sectors, Nigeria has not fully maximized its cargo business due to a lack of coordination among key stakeholders, he said.
Uriesi emphasized the importance of a strategic plan that involves airports, airlines, handlers, customs, and potential agro-exporters, adding that, such a plan would ensure efficient cargo handling processes, improve infrastructure, and promote export cargo development.
The Ibom Air COO commended the recent efforts of the Aviacargo Roadmap Committee, led by Mr. Ikechi Uko, to bring together industry players.
He called for greater support and participation from all stakeholders to ensure the success of this initiative.
By adopting a coordinated approach, Uriesi believes that Nigeria can significantly enhance its competitiveness in the global air cargo market and contribute to the overall development of its economy.
