International Civil Aviation Organization ICAO’s four-member team, led by Callum Vine, is currently in Nigeria to conduct security audits on Lagos and Abuja airports as part of the 2024 Universal Security Audit Programme (USAP) through Continuous Monitoring Approach (CMA).
The audit covers various aspects, including Inflight Security, Passenger and Baggage Security, Acts of Unlawful Interference, Facilitation, Legislation, Training, Quality Control Function, Operations, and Cargo, Mail, and Catering.
In preparation for this, the Banjul Accord Group Aviation Safety Oversight Organization (BAGASOO) organized Aviation Security Mock Audits in both airports from March 4th to 7th, 2024.
According to a statement by the Director, Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, NCAA, Mr. Micheal Achimugu, the USAP CMA is scheduled to run for two weeks, concluding on March 22, 2024.
Mr. Festus Keyamo, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, highlighted the importance of the Universal Security Audit Program in maintaining high security standards across Nigeria’s aviation industry.
The Acting Director General of Civil Aviation, Nigeria, Capt. Chris Ona Najomo, emphasized the audit’s objectives, focusing on improving global aviation security and assessing member states’ effective implementation of critical elements.
Both Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) in Abuja have been selected for on-site auditing to verify the implementation of security measures.
Capt. Najomo expressed optimism about Nigeria surpassing its previous rating due to industry transformations and the current administration’s commitment to secure, safe, and efficient air transportation.
The Acting DGCA assured full support and cooperation to ensure a smooth audit process.
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) plays a crucial role as the nation’s regulatory authority responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining the National Civil Aviation Security Programme (NCASP).
