The Acting Director General, Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority NCAA, Capt. Chris Ona Najomo says, with air travel becoming increasingly essential, ensuring the protection of passengers, staff, and aircraft has become a top priority for airports, airlines, and governments worldwide.
Captain Najomo who stated this at the just Airport Business Summit and Expo in Lagos, in his presentation entitled: “Addressing Existing Airport Safety and Security Concerns Through Regulatory Oversight” emphasized the importance of robust security measures to prevent terrorism, smuggling, human trafficking, and other illegal activities that could jeopardize the safety and operations of airports.
The Ag. DGCA represented at the General Manager, Aviation Security, AVSEC, NCAA, Mr. Akoja Okplefu, stressed the need for thorough background checks for airport employees, efficient passenger screening processes, advanced baggage screening technologies, modern surveillance systems, and strong cybersecurity measures.
Regulatory oversight, Najomo noted, is crucial in ensuring that airports adhere to established safety and security standards.
This includes monitoring compliance, facilitating international collaboration, providing training and certification, adapting to emerging threats, and addressing privacy concerns.
He noted that, while regulatory oversight is essential, it faces challenges such as balancing security with efficiency, managing financial costs, and addressing privacy concerns.
Adding that, the rapidly changing nature of security threats also requires regulators to be agile and responsive.
By prioritizing airport security and working together on a global scale, Capt. Najomo maintained, the aviation industry can enhance safety, protect passengers, and ensure a smooth and efficient travel experience.
