NAMA Prepares for ICAO Audit with Capacity Building Programs

The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has significantly improved the capacity of its air traffic controllers through various proficiency checks and training initiatives.

According to a statement by the NAMA Director, Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Alhaji Abdullahi Musa, in a bid to enhance the safety and efficiency of air travel in Nigeria, NAMA conducted an Annual Proficiency Check for 339 air traffic controllers and a Promotion Proficiency Check for 69 controllers between December 2023 and the present. 

Speaking at a training workshop in Lagos, Managing Director of NAMA, Engr. Farouk Ahmed Umar said, the agency carried out an English Language Proficiency Check for 243 controllers to ensure compliance with international standards.

These initiatives he noted, are part of NAMA’s efforts to prepare for the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Universal Safety Oversight Audit Programme (USOAP), adding that, the agency aims to close any existing gaps in its operations to meet the rigorous requirements of this audit.

Engr. Farouk represented by the Director, Air Traffic Services, Mr. John Tayo, disclosed other significant achievements of his administration in the area of air traffic management. 

These include the certification of 87 air traffic controllers in aerodrome, approach, and area control and the issuance of new or renewed ATC licenses to 91 controllers.

To further enhance capacity, he stated that, NAMA is deploying a 3-D Tower Simulator at Lagos Centrex for use by controllers while similar facilities are being planned for Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Kano airports.

The NAMA boss emphasized the importance of continuous training and capacity building for air traffic controllers crucial for ensuring the efficient and safe operation of Nigeria’s airspace.
