The National Agency for Food,Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in conjunction with the Nigeria Customs Service has established a joint committee to strengthen and tackle the influx of counterfeit medicines and substandard regulated products into the
country.

According to the director general of NAFDAC, Professor Moji Adeyeye at the establishing of the eight committees in Abuja last week, the forming of the joint committee was a fall out of the courtesy visit paid by the NADAC DG to the Comptoller General of Customs, Retired Colonel Hameed Ali on Tuesday.

Speaking on the occasion, retired Colonel Ali emphasized the need for the two government
agencies to close rank and work together  in the interest of Nigerians, particularly the youth and the housewives who were exposed to devastating effects of abuse of codeine containing cough syrups and tramadol illegally shipped into the country.

He pointed out the urgent need for NAFDAC and the Customs to put in place quick measures to prevent Nigerian politicians from taking undue advantage of the vulnerable youths and getting them hooked to drugs  so they could be used as thugs during electioneering campaigns.

In her response, the director general of NAFDAC, hinted that the newly established joint committee would come up with action plan on intensive education, training and foreign exchange program for the personnel of both agencies as well as joint enforcement operations.

The NAFDAC Boss commended the initiatives and eagerness of the ComptrollerGeneral to support NAFDAC’s concerted efforts to rid the country of counterfeit drugs and substandard regulated products.
