The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Lagos State chapter has announced plans to stage a picket at Turkish Airlines in Lagos on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, in response to the airline’s dismissal and sacking of union members.

According to a statement by the Acting General Secretary of the NLC, Comrade Chris Uyot, the union will continue to picket until the reinstated sacked/dismissed members are fully restored to their jobs without any losses.

The NLC has accused Turkish Airlines’ management in Lagos of attempting to exterminate the union, NUATE, from the airline.

The union accused the airline’s management of dismissing seven out of eleven union members without benefits under trumped-up charges and using a disciplinary committee constituted outside the negotiated Conditions of Service.

The Congress says, it has also become aware of plans to get rid of the remaining four union members to pave the way for the engagement of new staff who would be compelled not to join the union or procure a General Services Agreement (GSA).

The NLC has condemned the airline’s actions, stating that the management has wasted 10-14 years of service from the workers solely because they exercised their constitutional right to belong to a trade union.

The Congress has vowed not to tolerate this situation.

All affiliate unions in the aviation sector are urged to mobilize heavily for the picketing action without fail.

The FCT Council will stand by in case the matter needs to be escalated to Abuja airport.
