A filling Station managed by Forte Oil near the domestic wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport was engulfed by fire.
It is not clear what led to the fire outbreak but it was gathered that the fire may have started when a fuel tanker parked inside the filling station was off-loading it content of 33,000 liter of fuel.
The fire incident which later spread into the filling station at about 2 : 00pm caused panic all over the airport premises as people were seen running helter skelter in different directions.
It took the intervention of the fire fighters who arrived the scene at about 2: 17pm. The inferno was however, brought under control at about 3: 15pm by combined efforts of men of Lagos State Fire Service and Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) personnel
Since the filling station was right at the roundabout, leading to the Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal 2 and the General Aviation Terminal (GAT) , it was difficult for vehicles to pass through.
The blockage caused serious traffic snarl, delaying passengers and even airport workers and passers-by who were on their way to and from their offices. Those coming back from work could not also pass through the roundabout for fear of any further explosion.
An eye witness account revealed that it was a very minor fire outbreak that started gradually from the parked tanker.
According to him, the fire wouldn’t have escalated if the Firefighter had reached the scene earlier.
