Kampe Games Reserve Becomes Nigeria’s 17th National Park

The Kampe Games Reserve in Kwara State officially transitioned to a National Park in a ceremony held February 4, 2025.  

Kwara State Governor AbdulRaman AbdulRazaq, represented by Deputy Governor Elder Kayode Alabi, presided over the handover to the National Park Service.

Governor AbdulRazaq inaugurated the Steering Committee tasked with overseeing the transition, emphasizing the move as a “crucial moment” in environmental improvement and sustainable resource management. 

He highlighted the committee’s role in fulfilling the Federal Government’s roadmap for the reserve’s transformation.

The Minister of Environment, Mallam Balarabe Abbas Lawal, in a speech delivered by the Conservator General of the National Park Service, Dr. Ibrahim Musa Goni, announced that former President Muhammadu Buhari had approved the upgrade of ten Forest and Game Reserves to National Parks, bringing Nigeria’s total to 17.  

The Minister stated that this expansion aligns with global biodiversity conservation targets, including the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and contributes to enhanced national security. 

He commended Governor AbdulRazaq’s swift response and commitment to environmental protection.

Dr. Goni’s entourage included Assistant Conservator General, Ecology and Resource Management, Dr. MA Kabir. 

The ceremony was attended by state cabinet members, including the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Muhammed Shiaba.

The Etsu Patigi, Alhaji Ibrahim Umar Bologi II, Vice Chairman of the Kwara State Traditional Council, expressed gratitude to the Governor and pledged the full cooperation of the host communities for a smooth transition.
