International Women’s Day: APWEN celebrates NAHCO boss for her Sterling qualities

…..NAHCO boss urges active involvement of women in organisations

The Group Managing Director, Nigerian Aviation Handling Company PLC (NAHCOaviance PLC) Mrs.Olatokunbo Fagbemi has praised women in the country for their contributions and achievements in the typically male-dominated aviation sector.

While calling for the involvement of more women to help grow the aviation sector, Mrs. Fagbemi also called on parents to educate the girl child to take up sciences in school in order to become engineers to make breakthroughs in future.

Mrs. Fagbemi who played host to Association of Professional Women Engineers, APWEN in her office on the occasion of the International Women’s Day, marked globally on March 8, with the theme,’BalanceForBetter’, said women in Nigeria had made enormous contributions to the socio-economic development and wellbeing of the country that could not be ignored.

She sought more active participation of women in the efforts to build a better society, adding that women in various positions today were there on merit not because of quota system or because she was a woman considered to be the weaker sex.

The NAHCO boss said she was excited that women in aviation were taking key positions in the aviation sector especially in the area of management in agencies, airlines as captains, pilots cabin executives among others.

In her response, the President, Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria, APWEN, Engr. Mrs. Felicia Nnenna Agubata extolled the sterling qualities of Mrs Fagbemi, the NAHCO boss.

Agubata said the world was geared towards gender balance in boardrooms, politics and work place needed for economies and communities to thrive.

“She is being celebrated today because she made the women folk proud. We are proud of her”

Agubata urged the NAHCOAVIANCE boss to encourage women engineers to grow professional careers and attain the potential in engineering while encouraging the girl child to study the sciences ultimately leading to choice of engineering as a profession.

She also said APWEN would continue to enhance the recruitment of, retention and career development of women engineers through training, mentoring and networking.

International Women’s Day, a United Nations recognised day, is celebrated on March 8 every year.

The theme of this year’s celebration was “Balance for better”.

Highlights of the event was the presentation of an award to Mrs Fagbemi and the Airport Manager MMIA, Mrs. Victoria Shinaba for thw excellent work they been doing in the industry.
