The Association of Professional Women Engineers in Nigeria, Lagos Chapter, led by Engr. Atinuke Wuraola Owolabi, has unveiled a two-year strategic plan to encourage more women to pursue careers in engineering. 

This initiative aims to enhance the capacity of engineering students and promote economic inclusion for a more equitable future.

Engr. Owolabi, during her inauguration as the 10th Chairman, outlined key elements of the plan spanning 2023-2025.

These include launching a Resources, Technology, and Innovation Hub, presenting an Innovator of the Year award for female engineering students, and implementing an Artificial Intelligence (AI) club for girls in engineering.

Other components involve a reverse mentoring initiative, acquiring an 18-seater bus, capacity enhancement for members, unveiling a sustainable development goal 6 initiative, and engaging young minds in STEM through activities like introducing girls to engineering and science competitions.

Highlighting APWEN Lagos as a catalyst for innovative initiatives, Engr. Owolabi emphasized the hub’s features, aiming for a collaborative ecosystem where female engineering students, young engineers, and professionals can exchange knowledge and develop innovative solutions.

“The primary objective of the Resource, Technology and Innovation Hub is to create a collaborative ecosystem where female engineering students(with 10% of our boys), young engineering and professional women engineers can access resources, exchange knowledge develop dev innovative solutions to address societal challenges”.

At the inauguration coinciding with International Women’s Day, themed ‘Empowering Women Through Economic Inclusion for an Equitable Future,’ Engr. Owolabi sought partnerships with government and private organizations, advocating for internship and graduate trainee schemes to support young female engineers.

“By collaborating with APWENLagos, you’ll bolster the professional growth of young female engineers and advanced gender equality in the field”.

She assured prospective partners that their collaboration would not only benefit female engineers but also promote diversity and inclusivity in the engineering sector, driving innovation and sustainable development.

The APWEN chairman Lagos, promised the Association’s commitment not only to collaborate with the federal and state governments to foster innovation but also to key into President Bola Tinubu’s vision on Renewed Hope Agenda to generate groundbreaking ideas with global impact.

The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Tayo Ayinde, applauded APWEN Lagos’s strategic initiatives and pledged unwavering support from his administration for the journey to empower and innovate within the engineering profession.
