Consumer Protection: NCAA Kicks Off National Summit to Address Industry Pain Points

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has kicked off a National stakeholders’ summit in Lagos aimed at revamping the aviation industry and promoting passenger protection. 

The Theme of the Consumer Protection summit, “Achieving Increased Adoption of Digital Technology in Air travel Customer Complain Management: The Regulatory Perspective”, is focused on addressing the challenges facing the sector and finding solutions to improve the travel experience for passengers.

Key players in the aviation ecosystem, airlines, ground handling companies, security agencies: police, NDLEA, Immigration, Airport managers, travel agencies and others Involved in passenger facilitation at the airports were in attendance.

Speaking through his Director, Public Affairs and Consumer Protection Mr. Michael Achimugu, Capt. Chris Najomo, Ag. Director-General, NCAA, emphasized the need for honest and patriotic discussions to address the industry’s problems. 

He noted that the summit is not a platform for showboating, but rather a call to action to fix the issues that have plagued the industry for years.

Capt. Najomo highlighted the need for collaboration and transparency in addressing the industry’s problems. 

He stated that the NCAA is committed to working with stakeholders to find solutions that prioritize passenger rights and safety.

The NCAA boss, noted that airlines are in business and must make decisions based on the same principles that passengers apply to their personal businesses. 

While also urging passengers to honour their responsibilities as clearly stated in Part 19 of the NCAA Regulations 2023.

The summit provided a platform for stakeholders to share their experiences and perspectives on the issues affecting the sector.

The questions of the who, what, where, when, why, and how surrounding the industry’s challenges were answered by the various stakeholders concerned.

Similar stakeholders’ engagement is also expected to take place in Abuja and Port Harcourt and is expected to lead to the implementation of concrete solutions to address the industry’s challenges and improve the travel experience for passengers.
