
Mr. Fortune Idu, organizer of the DroneTecx Conference, set to host the 4th Drone Technology Conference and Exhibition 2024 in an interview focus on the growing drone industry in Nigeria and the strides being made to integrate this technology into various sectors.
The event is coming up on 14-16 May, 2024 at the NIGAV Expo Center, Murtala Mohammed International Airport, MMIA, Lagos.
He emphasized the multifaceted applications of drones, ranging from mapping and surveying to medical delivery and firefighting.
Idu highlighted the potential for drones to revolutionize industries such as agriculture by significantly reducing operational costs and increasing efficiency.
Regarding the level of awareness and acceptance of drones in Nigeria, the DroneTecx organizer acknowledged that while the technology is still emerging globally, there are significant regulatory and security concerns hindering its widespread adoption.
He noted the efforts of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to establish a universal regulatory framework for drone operations.
On local drone production, Mr. Idu mentioned the existence of companies in Nigeria assembling drones from CKDs (Completed Knockdown Equipment parts).
Idu who also doubles as the Chairman, Airport Business Summit Expo, ABSE, cited examples of Nigerian manufacturers showcasing locally assembled drones at previous exhibitions, indicating the country’s capacity in this area.
Addressing the regulatory challenges surrounding drone importation and operation in Nigeria, he pointed out the role of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) in overseeing drone activities.
He highlighted the need for a clear national policy framework to guide drone usage and promote industry growth.
Looking ahead, Mr. Idu expressed optimism about the future of drone technology in Nigeria, envisioning innovations such as drone taxis and drone diagnostics within the next decade.
He emphasized the country’s potential to capitalize on this technology and called for concerted efforts to create a conducive regulatory environment and promote local manufacturing.
Reflecting on the past three years of organizing the DroneTecx Technology Conference, Mr. Idu shared the challenges faced in overcoming regulatory hurdles and fostering awareness about drones.
He highlighted the conference’s role in advocating for the recognition and regulation of drone technology in Nigeria, leading to positive engagement with government agencies and stakeholders.
